Hôtel de Glace Quebec: Is the Ice Hotel Visit Worth It?
4 min read
The Hôtel de Glace is rebuilt from ice and snow every winter, so it is a seasonal visit, not a year-round attraction. The booking listing calls it the only ice hotel in North America and describes a self-guided tour through the building. Valcartier puts it about 20 minutes from Québec City.
When it is open
The hotel is part of Village Vacances Valcartier and exists only in winter. It is not open in autumn. Valcartier announces the opening for Saturday 26 December 2026 and sells winter packages that include the hotel until 21 March 2027, but the opening date depends on the weather, so check the Valcartier ice hotel page before you plan. Its day ticket gives access from 10 am, and from 8 pm the suites are reserved for overnight guests. If you are visiting Québec before late December, choose the Christmas market instead.
What you get
The Hôtel de Glace visit is a self-guided walk through the hotel. It costs €25.63, is rated 4.7/5 and has 594 reviews.
The booking page lists admission and access to the rooms, themed suites, bar and chapel. There is no fixed length: you enter at any time during opening hours on the date you booked and go at your own pace. Whether transport from Old Québec is included is unclear from the booking page, so plan how you will get to Valcartier at 2280 boulevard Valcartier. Overnight stays in an ice room are a different product from this visit ticket and are arranged with the hotel.
What to wear and who it suits
Everything is made of ice and snow, so expect temperatures below freezing inside. Wear warm boots with grip, gloves and a hat, and bring layers; your phone battery also drains faster in the cold. Because there is no guide, you set your own pace, which suits families with restless children and travellers who prefer to take photographs rather than listen to a commentary. Neither the booking page nor Valcartier’s visit page says anything about wheelchair or pushchair access, so ask the operator before you go.
Pair it with another winter plan
Valcartier also runs snow tubing, priced at €29.30. It is a separate ticket, and its booking page rules out pregnant women. Valcartier’s own site also sells a one-day package that combines the slides, the ice hotel and the skating trail. For other cold-weather ideas, including snowmobiling and snowshoeing, see the Quebec winter activities page, where 12 offers start at €20.39.
Our verdict
Go if you will be in Québec between roughly late December and March and want a distinctive winter experience; the visit ticket is the simplest way to see it. Skip it if you dislike the cold, or if you are visiting outside the season, when nothing is open. Because weather decides closures, check the hotel’s dates again shortly before you go.
