Île d'Orléans and Montmorency Falls: Half-Day Tour, E-Bike or Rental Car?

Île d’Orléans sits just downstream of Quebec City in the St Lawrence, and the question visitors ask is whether to join a half-day tour that also stops at Montmorency Falls, ride the island by e-bike, or drive it yourself. The answer depends on how much time you have and whether you want the island or the checklist.

The island in brief

The island is connected to the mainland by a single bridge and is made up of six municipalities, according to Québec tourism listings. One guided e-bike tour describes it as a 15-minute drive from Old Québec. It is farmland and villages rather than a list of sights, so what you do there depends on the producers and farms you visit.

The half-day tour

The Montmorency Falls and Île d’Orléans half-day tour is the most-reviewed trip in this guide, with 2,843 reviews and 4.4/5. It costs €63.85 and lasts about 315 minutes, with a morning or afternoon departure. It covers Montmorency Falls, Île d’Orléans and the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré. The booking page splits the time as follows: about 45 minutes at the falls (the cable car is optional and costs extra), about 45 minutes on the island, mostly as a scenic drive with a stop at a chocolate shop, 45 minutes at the basilica and a short stop at a copper art studio. It starts and ends at 18 rue Pierre-Olivier-Chauveau in Old Québec. A longer, falls-only visit is covered in our Montmorency Falls guide.

A longer option is the city tour, Montmorency Falls and Île d’Orléans, with 98 reviews and a price of €77.83. It lasts 7 hours and adds about 2 hours in Old Québec and on the Plains of Abraham to about 45 minutes at the falls, the island and the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré shrine.

By e-bike or on a taste trail

The self-guided e-bike rental lasts four hours and costs €57.98. You collect the bike on the island, at 507 route Prévost in Saint-Laurent-de-l’Île-d’Orléans, and follow a suggested route or your own. According to the booking page, hotel transport, tastings and meals are not part of the rental, and children under 12 are excluded. The listing warns that there are no bike lanes, so you share the road with traffic. It suits confident cyclists who want freedom.

The guided e-bike tour with tastings is also four hours and costs €145.90. It stops for berries, chocolate and wine at local farms, a chocolate factory and a family-run vineyard. It starts from the same base on the island, the booking page names English and Spanish as guide languages, and you need to be able to ride a regular bike and be tall enough for an adult one.

If you prefer to eat rather than ride, the Island of Orléans Taste Trail lasts three hours and costs €56.07. It features local producers and products such as jam, cider and nougat, and has 296 reviews. The bus leaves from the Horloge du Jura in Old Québec, tastings with alcohol are only for those aged 18 and over, and the booking page says the tour is not wheelchair accessible.

Should you rent a car?

A car gives you the island at your own pace and lets you add the falls by yourself, but you do all the driving and pay for parking and fuel. If you are already renting for other trips, compare car hire in Québec City and check excess, fuel policy and deposit with the rental company before you book. For this one day, a tour is simpler and a car is only worth it if you want to linger.

See all trips on the Montmorency Falls and Île d’Orléans tours page.

Our verdict

Take the half-day tour if you have one morning or afternoon and want the falls and the island in a single trip. Choose the guided e-bike tour for tastings and a slower pace, the self-guided rental only if you are happy cycling without bike lanes, and a car if you want to stop wherever you like.
